About the artwork

The small black bird near the upper left often lands a moment after the eye finds the map shape and the red robes around it. Placement does much of the work here, with the painted landmass held left of center and the surrounding figures and birds breaking loose into the wide white paper. The subject joins a labeled map of Bhutan with robed human forms and raven-like birds, so the image reads as part devotional vision, part flight scene, and part symbolic cartography across a mostly empty field. Red carries the painting first, while soft greens, pale ochres, and faint gray contours keep the center from going flat, and the white ground gives every dark wing and robe edge more lift than a packed background would. The technique appears to be watercolor on paper, using thin washes, soft bleeding edges, and lightly drawn lines for place names and borders, and the Arches paper texture stays quiet enough that the floating forms don't get crowded in a simple frame on a clear wall.
